The complete annotated master bibliography behind this project — Consciousness: A Global, Historical, and Technoscientific Annotated Bibliography. It is organized by time and theme around a single thread: the Western schism that handed measurable nature to science and left lived soul to theology, and the reconvergence now forced by evolution, neuroscience, animal minds, psychedelics, robotics, and AI. Every source the theory and the build lean on is somewhere in here.
Master synthesis of the two prior bibliographies. This version merges the ancient/global consciousness bibliography with the post-DNA/hard-problem-to-AI bibliography. It is organized by time and theme, with an interpretive thread: a Western schism in which early modern science increasingly claimed mathematical, mechanical, and public nature, while soul, first-person interiority, and salvation were left largely to theology; then a gradual reconvergence forced by evolution, neuroscience, animal studies, psychedelics, robotics, AI, LLMs, drones, autonomous systems, and moral uncertainty.
Format. Each entry is written as: bibliographic reference — summary. For ancient and scriptural works, the bibliographic reference gives a standard scholarly edition or translation where possible, because there is no single modern publication event. For clusters in the earlier lists, this file uses representative references and keeps the conceptual thread intact. Where an item appeared in both previous lists, the summary has been merged rather than duplicated.
Caution. 'Consciousness' is not a timeless one-word object. Greek psyche, Sanskrit atman/purusha/citta/vijnana, Chinese xin, Arabic nafs/ruh/qalb/aql, Hebrew nephesh/ruach/lev, African personhood, Indigenous perspectivism, modern phenomenal consciousness, and AI consciousness indicators are overlapping but non-identical fields of concern. This bibliography uses 'consciousness' as a family resemblance term: awareness, selfhood, soul, subjectivity, attention, sentience, mind, personhood, interiority, experience, and world-disclosure.
The governing thread: schism and reconvergence
The Western schism of consciousness does not begin with a single villain or a single doctrine. It is a long redistribution of authority. Late antique and medieval traditions placed soul, intellect, imagination, will, memory, ethical formation, and salvation inside unified theological-cosmological systems. Early modern science, especially Galileo's mathematization of nature and Descartes's separation of thinking substance from extended substance, made nature newly available to mathematical and experimental inquiry. That was an enormous intellectual liberation. But it also produced a neglected remainder: subjective experience, soul, meaning, value, and first-person interiority were often excluded from the new public science of matter and left in the custody of theology, introspection, literature, or metaphysics.
From the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, philosophers repeatedly tried to repair or reinterpret the split: Spinoza's one-substance dual-aspect view, Leibniz's graded perceptions, Kant's transcendental apperception, German idealism, Romantic nature-philosophy, Schopenhauer's will, James's stream, Bergson's duration, Husserl's phenomenology, Freud and Janet's unconscious, Whitehead's process, and Russell's structural physics all return to what mechanism leaves out.
After 1953, the schism changes form. DNA makes life legible as information; cybernetics and AI make mind legible as computation; ethology and evolutionary biology make behavior and sociality legible as adaptation; neuroscience makes perception, attention, coma, dreams, anesthesia, and report experimentally tractable. By the 1990s, these successes sharpen the hard problem: we can explain functions, access, report, integration, behavior, representation, and information processing, but why should any of this be lived from the inside? The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries then force reconvergence. Animals, octopuses, infants, coma patients, psychedelic subjects, meditators, brain organoids, robots, LLMs, autonomous drones, and AI agents all make the old separation between nature, soul, machine, and moral subject unstable again.
I. Before the Western schism: global archives of soul, heart-mind, self, no-self, and personhood
A. Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Hebrew, and Hellenistic Jewish beginnings
1. Faulkner, R. O., trans. The Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1969. See also Lichtheim, Miriam. Ancient Egyptian Literature. 3 vols. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973-1980 — The Egyptian mortuary corpus is a foundational archive for personhood before philosophical mind-body dualism. The person is not a single inner subject but a composite of body, name, heart, shadow, ka, ba, ritual speech, memory, and cosmic order. Conscious continuity depends on preservation, judgment, and right relation to divine order, making selfhood bodily, social, ritual, and cosmic at once.
2. Lichtheim, Miriam, trans. Ancient Egyptian Literature, Volume I: The Old and Middle Kingdoms. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973. Especially the Instruction of Ptahhotep — Egyptian wisdom literature treats the heart as a locus of discernment, restraint, listening, speech, and ethical formation. Its psychology is practical rather than introspective in the modern sense: the wise person trains attention, appetite, and social responsiveness. It belongs in a consciousness bibliography because it links cognition to character and order rather than private mental representation.
3. George, Andrew R., trans. The Epic of Gilgamesh: The Babylonian Epic Poem and Other Texts in Akkadian and Sumerian. London: Penguin Classics, 1999 — Gilgamesh is an early literary phenomenology of mortality, dream, grief, friendship, and reflective self-awareness. Enkidu's death awakens Gilgamesh to finitude, and the search for immortality becomes an inquiry into human limits. Consciousness appears here as the painful awareness of death and the longing for remembered significance.
4. Foster, Benjamin R., trans. Before the Muses: An Anthology of Akkadian Literature. 3rd ed. Bethesda, MD: CDL Press, 2005. See Atrahasis and Enuma Elish — Mesopotamian creation myths model human life as a mixture of divine, material, laboring, and ritual dimensions. They do not isolate consciousness as an inner object but explain human animation and agency within cosmic service and divine conflict. They are crucial pre-philosophical sources for life, agency, spirit, and the burden of being human.
5. Alter, Robert, trans. The Hebrew Bible: A Translation with Commentary. 3 vols. New York: W. W. Norton, 2018. See Genesis, Psalms, Job, Ecclesiastes, Ezekiel — Biblical anthropology is strongly embodied. Nephesh often means living being, life, appetite, or throat; ruach means breath, wind, spirit; lev/levav is heart, thought, intention, courage, and will. This tradition does not cleanly divide mind from body; consciousness is breath-animated, morally answerable life before God.
6. Philo of Alexandria. On the Creation of the Cosmos according to Moses. Translated by David T. Runia. Leiden: Brill, 2001. See also The Works of Philo. Translated by C. D. Yonge. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 1993 — Philo fuses biblical anthropology with Platonic and Stoic philosophy. He treats soul, logos, passions, inner perception, allegorical interpretation, and ascent toward divine intelligibility. He is a key bridge through which scriptural life, Greek soul theory, and later Christian and Islamic psychology become mutually entangled.

7. Jamison, Stephanie W., and Joel P. Brereton, trans. The Rigveda: The Earliest Religious Poetry of India. 3 vols. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2014 — The Rigveda is not a modern consciousness treatise, but it contains early reflections on manas (mind), prana (breath/life), inspired speech, ritual attention, cosmic order, and the question of creation. The Nasadiya Sukta is especially important for epistemic humility: even the highest deity may not know the origin of things. Later Indian philosophies of self, mind, and liberation inherit this matrix of breath, speech, ritual, and cosmic intelligence.
8. Whitney, William Dwight, and Charles Rockwell Lanman, trans. Atharva-Veda Samhita. 2 vols. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1905 — The Atharva Veda preserves early Indian reflections on healing, life-force, memory, vulnerability, mind, and embodied disorder. It is a valuable source for a ritual-medical psychology in which mental, bodily, linguistic, and cosmic powers are continuous. It helps prevent reducing Indian consciousness traditions to later metaphysics alone.
9. Olivelle, Patrick, trans. The Early Upanishads: Annotated Text and Translation. New York: Oxford University Press, 1998. See Brhadaranyaka Upanishad — The Brhadaranyaka Upanishad contains some of the most radical early reflections on the knower. Yajnavalkya describes the self as the seer of seeing and hearer of hearing, that which cannot be objectified like ordinary things. It is foundational for the idea of a witnessing self and for later Advaita arguments that consciousness is the condition of all experience.
10. Olivelle, Patrick, trans. The Early Upanishads. See Chandogya Upanishad — The Chandogya links the deepest self with the subtle essence of reality through teachings such as 'tat tvam asi.' Its consciousness theory is pedagogical and metaphysical: one comes to know the self by analogies, meditations, and a transformed understanding of reality. The text becomes central to Vedanta because it suggests that individual selfhood and cosmic ground are not ultimately separate.
11. Olivelle, Patrick, trans. The Early Upanishads. See Aitareya Upanishad — The Aitareya is famous for the mahavakya often rendered 'consciousness is Brahman.' It makes intelligence or awareness not a mere human property but the deepest metaphysical principle. Mysore: Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, 1952 — The Mandukya offers a concise taxonomy of waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and the 'fourth' (turiya). It is one of the classic global analyses of states of consciousness. Its key move is to make deep sleep and dream philosophically central rather than marginal anomalies.
14. Miller, Barbara Stoler, trans. The Bhagavad-Gita: Krishna's Counsel in Time of War. New York: Bantam, 1986 — The Gita synthesizes Sankhya, Yoga, devotion, action, metaphysics, and moral psychology. Consciousness appears as confusion under crisis, disciplined equanimity, witnessing self, divine vision, and participation in cosmic agency. It is indispensable because it treats consciousness as something transformed in action, not merely contemplated in withdrawal.
15. Larson, Gerald James, and Ram Shankar Bhattacharya, eds. Samkhya: A Dualist Tradition in Indian Philosophy. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1987. See Isvarakrishna, Samkhyakarika — Classical Sankhya distinguishes purusha, pure witnessing consciousness, from prakriti, nature, which includes intellect, ego, mind, senses, and material processes. It is one of the clearest dualist systems in global philosophy. Its radical claim is that ordinary mental activity is not consciousness itself but subtle matter illuminated by consciousness.
16. Bryant, Edwin F., trans. and comm. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. New York: North Point Press, 2009 — Patanjali defines yoga as the cessation of the fluctuations of citta. The text separates the seer from mental modifications and makes attention training a path to liberation. It is foundational for meditation theory, altered states, absorption, misidentification, and the first-person study of attention.
17. Gautama. Nyaya-Sutra. Translated by Ganganatha Jha. 4 vols. Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 1984 [orig. 1913-1919] — Nyaya develops realist epistemology: perception, inference, comparison, testimony, error, and debate. It treats the self as a real enduring subject that has cognitions, desires, aversions, pleasures, pains, and volitions. It is crucial because it debates whether consciousness is intrinsic to self or a contingent quality generated under causal conditions.
18. Kanada. Vaisesika-Sutra. Translated by Nandalal Sinha. Allahabad: Panini Office, 1911 — Vaisesika offers a realist and atomist ontology in which selves are substances and cognitions are qualities. Consciousness is not the ultimate ground of reality in the Advaitic sense; it arises in embodied selves through causal relations. This gives Indian philosophy a robust non-idealist, pluralist alternative.
19. Clooney, Francis X. Thinking Ritually: Rediscovering the Purva Mimamsa of Jaimini. Vienna: De Nobili Research Library, 1990. See also Prabhakara and Kumarila in Indian epistemology — Mimamsa philosophers develop sophisticated accounts of cognition, self-luminosity, linguistic understanding, ritual agency, and error. Prabhakara's triputi-pratyaksa view holds that cognition reveals itself, its object, and its subject together; Kumarila develops alternative accounts of self-awareness. These debates are among the most technically precise premodern analyses of whether consciousness is self-presenting.
20. Badarayana. The Vedanta-Sutras with the Commentary by Sankaracarya. Translated by George Thibaut. 2 vols. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1890-1896 — The Brahma Sutra systematizes Upanishadic teaching and becomes the major battlefield for Vedanta. It does not give a single consciousness doctrine by itself; rather, it becomes the matrix through which Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, and others debate whether consciousness is identical with Brahman, belongs to individual selves, or is qualified by God and world.
21. Nikhilananda, Swami, trans. Mandukyopanishad with Gaudapada's Karika and Sankara's Commentary. Mysore: Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, 1952 — Gaudapada radicalizes the analysis of waking, dream, deep sleep, and the fourth into a nondual doctrine of unborn reality. Ordinary subject-object distinctions are treated as dreamlike constructions. This is a major bridge between Upanishadic reflection and Advaita metaphysics.
22. Sankara. Brahma-Sutra-Bhasya. Translated by Swami Gambhirananda. Kolkata: Advaita Ashrama, 1965. See also Sankara's Upanishad and Gita commentaries — Sankara's Advaita Vedanta identifies the deepest self, atman, with Brahman, pure consciousness. Individuality and world-plurality are explained through ignorance or misapprehension, not denied as mere nothing. Sankara is central to any global bibliography of consciousness because he gives one of the strongest arguments that consciousness is not produced by objects but is the condition of all object-appearance.
23. Ramanuja. Sri-Bhasya. Translated by Swami Vireswarananda. Chennai: Sri Ramakrishna Math, 1962. See also Vedarthasangraha. Translated by S. S. Raghavachar. Mysore: Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, 1956 — Ramanuja rejects strict Advaita while affirming the dependence of selves and world on Brahman. Consciousness belongs to real individual selves, but these selves exist as modes of God. His work preserves devotion, plurality, embodiment, and personal subjectivity within a theistic metaphysics.
24. Madhva. Brahma-Sutra-Bhasya. Translated in selected form in B. N. K. Sharma, The Philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya. Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 1962 — Madhva's dualist Vedanta insists on eternal distinctions between God, souls, and matter. Consciousness belongs to individual souls that never become identical with God. This tradition is essential because Indian philosophy includes robust theistic dualism as well as no-self Buddhism and nondual Advaita.

28. Umasvati. Tattvartha Sutra: That Which Is. Translated by Nathmal Tatia. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1994 — Jain philosophy treats jiva, soul, as intrinsically conscious and capable of infinite knowledge, but obscured by karmic matter. Embodiment is a condition of bondage, not the source of awareness. This is essential for Indian pluralist realism and for the idea that liberation is purification and expansion of consciousness.
29. Kundakunda. Samayasara. Translated by A. Chakravarti. New Delhi: Bharatiya Jnanpith, 1971 — Kundakunda distinguishes the pure self from karmic and empirical accretions. The true self is knowing and aware, while ordinary identity is entangled in matter, passion, and misrecognition. The text is important for comparison with Advaita witnessing consciousness and Buddhist no-self.
30. Aurobindo, Sri. The Life Divine. Pondicherry: Sri Aurobindo Ashram, 1939-1940; rev. ed. 1949 — Aurobindo offers a modern evolutionary Vedanta in which consciousness is involved in matter and evolves toward supramental realization. He combines Indian metaphysics, Darwinian evolution, and spiritual psychology. His work is speculative but important for linking consciousness to cosmic and biological development.

Tiruvannamalai: Sri Ramanasramam, various editions — Ramana's method of self-inquiry asks the practitioner to trace the 'I'-thought back to its source. 32. Nanamoli, Bhikkhu, and Bhikkhu Bodhi, trans. The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha: A Translation of the Majjhima Nikaya. Boston: Wisdom, 1995. See also Bodhi, trans. The Connected Discourses of the Buddha. Boston: Wisdom, 2000 — The early Buddhist Nikayas and Agamas analyze consciousness as dependently arisen rather than as a permanent self. The five aggregates replace soul-substance with dynamic processes: form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. This is one of the earliest and most sustained anti-essentialist psychologies in world thought.
33. Nyanaponika Thera, trans. and comm. The Heart of Buddhist Meditation. York Beach, ME: Samuel Weiser, 1962. See Satipatthana Sutta and Mahasatipatthana Sutta — The mindfulness discourses train attention to body, feeling, mind, and mental phenomena. Consciousness investigates its own arising without positing a permanent observer behind experience. They are central because they make disciplined first-person observation a path to insight.
34. Rhys Davids, C. A. F., trans. A Buddhist Manual of Psychological Ethics: Dhammasangani. London: Royal Asiatic Society, 1900 — The Dhammasangani and Abhidhamma literature classify experience into momentary mental and material events. 35. Buddhaghosa. The Path of Purification: Visuddhimagga. Translated by Bhikkhu Nanamoli. Kandy: Buddhist Publication Society, 1956; rev. ed. Seattle: Pariyatti, 1999 — Buddhaghosa synthesizes Theravada ethics, concentration, insight, and Abhidhamma psychology. The person is a conventional designation for interacting parts and processes. It is a classic treatment of agency, memory, responsibility, and continuity without metaphysical ego-substance.
37. Nagarjuna. The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way. Translated and commented by Jay L. Garfield. New York: Oxford University Press, 1995 — Nagarjuna argues that all phenomena, including consciousness, are empty of intrinsic nature because they arise dependently. The argument undermines both substantialist self-theories and substantialist mind-theories. It is not nihilism but a critique of reification.

London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1932 — The Lankavatara Sutra emphasizes transformation of consciousness and the unreliability of conceptual discrimination. 42. Vasubandhu. Abhidharmakosabhasyam. Translated by Leo M. Pruden. 4 vols. Berkeley: Asian Humanities Press, 1988-1990 — Vasubandhu's Treasury of Abhidharma is one of the most important works of Buddhist scholastic psychology. It analyzes perception, mental factors, karma, cosmology, and conscious events with extraordinary precision. 49. Dorje, Gyurme, trans. The Tibetan Book of the Dead: The Great Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate States. Edited by Graham Coleman and Thupten Jinpa. New York: Viking, 2005 — The Bardo Thodol describes intermediate states after death through lights, deities, projections, fear, recognition, and liberation. Read religiously, phenomenologically, or psychologically, it is a major work on death-consciousness and altered states. It makes recognition within experience the decisive spiritual act.

XII. Final synthesis: the reconvergence
The modern West gained the public sciences by narrowing the admissible objects of knowledge: mathematical extension, mechanical causation, measurable quantity, repeatable experiment. That narrowing was powerful and necessary, but it left consciousness divided. Lived quality, soul, meaning, value, and first-person presence were either privatized, theologized, aestheticized, or treated as suspicious. Philosophy repeatedly tried to heal the wound, but the empirical reconvergence waited for biology, computation, neuroscience, and machines to mature.
The reconvergence is now unavoidable. Evolution asks why and where sentience emerged. Animal studies ask which beings have experience and moral standing.
