Approximate age:237,500 years old=average of minimum (0.175 Ma) and maximum (0.3 Ma)

Date based on: unspecified See map of sites with similar ages

Dating reference: Chris Stringer, The chronological and evolutionary position of the Broken Hill cranium. AAPA meeting presentation 2011. "When combined with new biostratigraphic assessments, a later Middle Pleistocene age for the cranium is favoured. A relatively late date for the Broken Hill cranium suggests a long time span for the rhodesiensis/heidelbergensis group and warrants caution about inferring the presence of early modern humans from the presence of early Middle Stone Age artifacts."

Hominids: Homo rhodesiensis

Archaeology:Acheulean  Middle Stone Age (MSA)/Mousterian

Important specimens: Kabwe cranium, bone tools

Notes: African Archaeological Review, Volume 9, Number 1 / December, 1991 DOI: 10.1007/BF01117215 Geographic placement is on quarry near town of Kabwe (formerly Broken Hill). The Kabwe cranium was recoved by people working in this general area, but the exact locaition of the of the cranium is unknown.

Fossilized.org presents precise geographic locations and current best date estimates for late Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene sites with human ancestor (hominin) fossils and archaeology. Several interactive visual interfaces allow users to generate maps and tables that relate localities, fossils, tools, and evolutioanry events with geography and time. The data content is dynamic and is updated daily, as are new interface features. This site started as a course syllabus for Anthropology 3101: Human Evolution 2 at California State University, East Bay, and grew with each quarter it was used. Now fossilized.org has over 200 sites and hundreds of bibliographic citations.
