Approximate age:550,000 years old=average of minimum (0.1 Ma) and maximum (1 Ma)

Date based on: ESR, U-Series, Paleomag See map of sites with similar ages

Dating reference: Antoine, P., & Lozouet, L. (2007). Pleistocene fluvial terraces from northern France (Seine, Yonne, Somme): synthesis, and new results from interglacial deposits. Quaternary Science Reviews, 26(22-24), 2701-2723.

Hominids:

Archaeology:Acheulean

Important specimens: Early discoveries of primitive tools with extinct animals.

Notes: Menchecourt is the most important site worked by de Perthes, but there were others, noteably Caours. The dates on the Pleistocene terraces of the Somme in the Mechecourt area are not precise. The artifact-bearing horizons accumulated after 1 Ma, probably before 0.1 Ma. Lower units extend deeper into the early Pleistocene, but the majority of the material is from higher in the section, and the dates in this DB reflect that fact.

Location: Somme Valley, Abbeville, France
Map location/coordinates reference: Prestwich, J. (1860). On the Occurrence of Flint-Implements, Associated with the Remains of Animals of Extinct Species in Beds of a Late Geological Period, in France at Amiens and Abbeville, and in England at Hoxne. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, 150, 277-317.

Fossilized.org presents precise geographic locations and current best date estimates for late Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene sites with human ancestor (hominin) fossils and archaeology. Several interactive visual interfaces allow users to generate maps and tables that relate localities, fossils, tools, and evolutioanry events with geography and time. The data content is dynamic and is updated daily, as are new interface features. This site started as a course syllabus for Anthropology 3101: Human Evolution 2 at California State University, East Bay, and grew with each quarter it was used. Now fossilized.org has over 200 sites and hundreds of bibliographic citations.
